Recreational Activities & Attractions in the Florida Keys

Marathon Key is one of the world's most diverse and recreationally oriented destinations.  Activities range from snorkeling or diving on the #1 rated reef in the United States (Sombrero Reef) to world class sport fishing, day trips to private islands, and luxurious Caribbean style beaches and parks.  Sombrero Country Club Golf course is ranked number one in the Florida Keys and is less than 1 mile from Atlantic Breeze vacation homes. Still not enough?, try visiting the local Crane Point Hammock Historical museum, enjoy endless miles of walking and biking paths and trails, or kayak/Jet Ski around the island mangroves and see unusual marine life, birds, and reptiles. Tired of walking? Rent a bicycle, scooter, or motorcycle from Wheels-2-Go.com.   We highly recommend a trip to the Dolphin Research Center where you can personally swim and play with the Dolphins and Sea Lions or simply enjoy one of the many shows scheduled 7 days a week. Of course Marathon also offers golf, water sports, and site seeing plane rides.

A trip to the Florida Keys is less expensive than a Caribbean getaway, doesn't require a passport or visa, and is within driving distance for many of us.  Warm, sunny days, with temperatures ranging from 70 degrees to the low 80's in January, help us escape the winter blues. Although high season sometimes means crowds if you avoid staying in places like Key West and Fort Lauderdale and make your reservations and place of stay in the middle Keys (Cudjoe to Grassy Key) you'll enjoy a bit of tranquility.   If you have to visit Key West, may a day trip of it.  Key West is less than a 1hr drive on the overseas highway from the majority of the middle Keys such as Marathon. -- When in Key West, try avoiding the northern half of Duval Street, and you might find a town with a surprising sense of peace and island sensuality.

The best way to experience the Florida Keys is to slow down. Lean back and enjoy a cup of Cuban coffee in the morning under your private Tiki Hut or enjoy the evening sunsets on the shoals with wine, cheese, crackers, and of course conch fritters. Rent a bike. Pedaling up and down the the miles of bike paths in Marathon, you'll soon be overwhelmed by the breathtaking scenery of wildlife, ocean views, quant shops, mangroves not to mention the warm Caribbean breezes.

What to Do During the Day

For a shopping, take your favorite six-pack right with you from the local Marathon deli or Brass Monkey and head out to the Key West Fisheries for a taste of the local catch (es) of the day. dining in Marathon Key. Or, you can pick up a few unique take-home items from the local Keys Shell Shop, Bahamian style clothing stores, or Marathon Key Pet store.

Fresh tropical fruit is available on almost every street along the overseas highway in Marathon with vendors selling locally grown Kiwi, Pineapple, Bananas, Oranges, etc..

If you a first time visitor

What to Do at Night

Drinking and dancing is still the No. 1 way to end the perfect evening in the keys.  The locals hang out at The Hurricane, located in Marathon Florida, although there are many quiet oceanfront bars and grills scattered among the mangroves.  Be sure to have a designated driver as the local authorities strictly enforce the local limits and traffic laws.
