Key West is less than a 1hr drive on the overseas highway from the majority of the middle Keys such as Marathon. -- When in Key West, try avoiding the northern half of Duval Street, and you might find a town with a surprising sense of peace and island sensuality.
The best way to experience the Florida Keys is to slow down. Lean back and enjoy a cup of Cuban coffee in the morning under your private Tiki Hut or enjoy the evening sunsets on the shoals with wine, cheese, crackers, and of course conch fritters. Rent a bike. Pedaling up and down the the miles of bike paths in Marathon, you'll soon be overwhelmed by the breathtaking scenery of wildlife, ocean views, quant shops, mangroves not to mention the warm Caribbean breezes.
For a shopping, take your favorite six-pack right with you from the local Marathon deli or Brass Monkey and head out to the Key West Fisheries for a taste of the local catch (es) of the day. dining in Marathon Key. Or, you can pick up a few unique take-home items from the local Keys Shell Shop, Bahamian style clothing stores, or Marathon Key Pet store.
Fresh tropical fruit is available on almost every street along the overseas highway in Marathon with vendors selling locally grown Kiwi, Pineapple, Bananas, Oranges, etc..

Drinking and dancing is still the No. 1 way to end the perfect evening in the keys. The locals hang out at The Hurricane, located in Marathon Florida, although there are many quiet oceanfront bars and grills scattered among the mangroves. Be sure to have a designated driver as the local authorities strictly enforce the local limits and traffic laws.
